Counseling and Outreach

Sunrise provides free counseling to all survivors of domestic and sexual violence as well as friends and family who may be affected. Individual and group counseling is available to survivors regardless if the crime has been reported to law enforcement.

Sunrise also offers outreach services and advocacy services for survivors living in rural areas of Pasco County who may not otherwise be able to access services by going to where survivors live.

POWER AND CONTROL
Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of abusive behavior used to establish power and control within the context of an intimate relationship. It can include:

Verbal Abuse: constant criticism, making humiliating comments, name-calling, yelling, swearing

Emotional Abuse: denying/shifting blame, isolation, monitoring correspondence and whereabouts, destruction of property, stalking, using threatening actions or gestures

Financial Abuse: preventing a partner from getting or keeping a job or attending school, denying access to financial information and/or family income, damaging or ruining a partner’s credit

Physical Abuse: hitting, slapping, kicking, choking, pushing, punching, burning, using a weapon or other object to cause injury

Sexual Abuse: forcing a partner to engage in unwanted sexual acts, refusing to practice safe sex

Domestic Violence
Domestic violence isolates a survivor, reduces their options to leave the relationship, has a negative impact on the children in the household, affects their ability to work, can lead to a perpetrator stalking the survivor, and has a high risk of ending in life-threatening violence or death.

A safety plan is an important first step if you are in or have been in a violent relationship. Please call Sunrise's 24-hour hotline (352-521-3120) for more information on intimate partner violence.
